Valencia’s primary goalkeeper for the last two and a half seasons has been him, after he transferred from Dinamo Tbilisi in 2021, following stints on loan with FC Rustavi and Locomotive Tbilisi. During this time, he has made 100 appearances for the Spanish team, notably featuring in the Copa del Rey final against Real Betis in 2022, where Valencia suffered a 6-5 loss in a penalty shootout. He recently set a new Valencia record by starting 69 consecutive LaLiga matches earlier this year.
Where do I know him from?
Mamardashvili played a crucial role in Georgia reaching the last 16 of the Euros this summer, surprising many in the tournament. He stood out in the match against the Czech Republic by making the second-highest number of saves by a goalkeeper in a Euros group stage game, totaling 11 saves.
What is his style of play?
“Mama is a skilled goalkeeper known for his agility and speed,” stated defender Victor Mongil, who practiced with Mamardashvili at Dinamo Tbilisi in an interview with Breaking The Lines last year. Mongil highlighted Mamardashvili’s proficiency in handling low shots and reaching difficult balls, tasks that taller goalkeepers like Courtois or Donnarumma may struggle with. Mamardashvili’s exceptional reflexes, speed off the line, and ability to cover ground in one-on-one situations are reminiscent of Alisson. At 6’6″, he dominates his area effectively. While Mamardashvili is perceived as more of a shot-stopper rather than a sweeper-keeper like Alisson, there is confidence that he has the potential to evolve into a more versatile player, especially in a team like Liverpool’s.
Are Liverpool really interested?
It appears so, but the level of their interest varies depending on the source. Reports from Spain suggest a deal is nearing completion, contrasting with sources in Merseyside. Liverpool insiders suggest they are just keeping an eye on Mamardashvili for a possible future transfer, while Valencia sources suggest he has already committed to joining them in the upcoming season pending a finalized agreement between the clubs.
What have coaches said about him?
During ITV’s broadcast of Georgia’s 2-0 win against Portugal in the Euros group stage, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou praised Mamardashvili, highlighting his impressive goalkeeping skills and leadership qualities. Postecoglou noted Mamardashvili’s strong performance at Valencia and emphasized the importance of having a reliable goalkeeper to secure victories. Former Dinamo Tbilisi scout Mikha Gabechava also commended Mamardashvili for his leadership, communication, and presence on the field, which boost the confidence of the defensive line and contribute to the team’s overall effectiveness, especially given Georgia’s young squad.
