Rachel Reeves Becomes UK’s First Woman Finance Minister, Who Is She?

Rachel Reeves has made history by becoming the UK’s first female finance minister. Aged 45, Reeves, an economist, has committed to boosting the country’s economy. She is known to have excelled as a child chess champion and worked as an economist for the Bank of England. Reeves assumes the role of chancellor of the exchequer following her centre-left Labour party’s decisive victory in the recent UK general election, putting an end to the right-wing Conservatives’ 14-year rule.

Reeves expressed gratitude for being appointed chancellor of the exchequer by UK’s new Prime Minister Keir Starmer, emphasizing the importance of limitless ambitions for young girls and women. The Labour Party in the UK had focused on economic growth and wealth creation in its election manifesto. Reeves highlighted that economic growth is now a national priority and called for action to begin. The Labour Party committed to establishing Great British Energy to lead the funding for the transition to green energy.

Reeves, who was born in London, capitalized on the public’s frustration with Liz Truss, the predecessor of Sunak, whose 2022 mini-budget without funding caused the pound to plummet and led to a sharp increase in mortgage rates, exacerbating a cost-of-living dilemma.

Rachel Reeves Journey

At the age of 14, Reeves won the UK girls’ chess championship. She then pursued studies in philosophy, politics, and economics at the University of Oxford, followed by a Master’s degree from the London School of Economics. After working as an economist for ten years, initially at the Bank of England and later transitioning to the private industry, Reeves was elected as the Labour MP for Leeds West in northern England in 2010. Starmer appointed her as the Labour Party’s finance spokesperson eleven years later.
