Droupadi Murmu won an independent seat designated for women in the Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat elections of 1997 and was elected as a councillor. After that, she joined the BJP, or Bharatiya Janata Party. She was elected to the Odisha Legislative Assembly in 2000 from the Rairangpur Assembly constituency, and she held office for two terms, from 2000 to 2009. She served as the Minister of State with Independent Charge for Commerce and Transportation under the BJP and BJD coalition administration in Odisha from March 6, 2000, to August 6, 2002, and for the development of Fisheries and Animal Resources from August 6, 2002, to May 16, 2004.

Career and family
Murmu started her work as a junior assistant in the irrigation and power department of Odisha in 1979. She met and married Shyam Charan Murmu while employed there; she took on his surname, and the couple had a daughter who passed away at a young age. In 1983, she quit her employment to take care of her expanding family, which now comprised three additional kids. She was a teacher at the Sri Aurobindo Integral Education and Research Centre in Rairangpur from 1994 until 1997.
Following her 1997 election to the Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat (town council), Murmu became a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
