Early years
Bolt was born on August 21, 1986, in Sherwood Content, a tiny village in Jamaica, to parents Wellesley and Jennifer. Jennifer named her son Usain after her nephew-in-law, who had a classmate with the same name, while Bolt’s middle name, St Leo, was given to him by his aunt. Sadiki is his older brother, and Sherine is his younger sister. Bolt’s parents managed the local grocery shop in the remote area, and he spent his childhood playing cricket and football in the street with his brother, noting later, “When I was young, I didn’t really think about anything other than sports.” Bolt attended Waldensia Primary as a child, when he demonstrated his sprint talent when he ran in.
