Early Life

Thomas B. Kin Chong was born on May 24, 1938, in Edmonton, Alberta. His mother was Canadian, with Scottish and Irish roots, while his father was a Chinese immigrant who arrived in Canada during the 1930s. After immigrating, Chong’s father initially lived with an aunt in Vancouver. Tommy had an older brother named Stan (1936–2018). As a child, Chong moved with his family to Calgary, where they settled in a working-class neighborhood he referred to as “Dog Patch.” According to Chong, his father had been wounded during World War II and relocated to Calgary due to the presence of a veterans’ hospital.

There, he bought a modest home for $500 and supported the family on $50 a week. Chong left Crescent Heights High School at the age of 16, admitting he probably would have been expelled if he hadn’t dropped out. He began playing guitar to earn money and later remarked, “I discovered that music could get you laid, even if you were a scrawny, long-haired, geeky-looking guy like me.”
