Early life and education
Jane Seymour Fonda was born via caesarean section on December 21, 1937, at Doctors Hospital in the Yorkville neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. She is the daughter of Frances Ford Seymour, a Canadian-born socialite, and Henry Fonda, a renowned American actor. Her father once explained that the Fonda surname originated from an Italian ancestor who immigrated to the Netherlands in the 1500s. This ancestor married into Dutch society, and the family adopted Dutch given names. The first of Jane’s Fonda ancestors arrived in New York in 1650.
In addition to her Dutch heritage, Jane has English, French, and Scottish ancestry. She was named after Jane Seymour, the third wife of Henry VIII, to whom she is distantly related on her mother’s side. As a child, Fonda said she was often referred to as “Lady Jane” until the fourth grade. Her younger brother was actor Peter Fonda, and her maternal half-sister, Frances de Villers Brokaw.
