Cannon was born in San Diego, California, and was primarily raised by his paternal grandfather, whom both he and his biological father referred to as “dad.” He spent his childhood in the Bay Vista Housing Projects in Lincoln Park, a gang-heavy area in Southeast San Diego. During his teenage years, Cannon was associated with the Lincoln Park Bloods but chose to leave the gang after the loss of a close friend. He graduated from Monte Vista High School in Spring Valley in 1998, where he was president of the African Student Coalition and participated in track and field. His first opportunity in entertainment came when he performed stand-up comedy on his father’s local cable access TV show.
