Susan Sarandon Biography

After the 1968 Democratic Convention, a casting call went out for a film seeking young actors who resembled the protesters who had shaken the event. Two recent graduates of Catholic University in Washington, D.C.—Chris Sarandon and his wife, Susan Sarandon—traveled to New York to audition for the movie Joe (1970). Although Chris, who had trained as an actor, was passed over, Susan landed a major role. She was cast as Susan Compton, the daughter of ad executive Bill Compton (played by Dennis Patrick). In the film, Bill murders his daughter’s drug-dealing boyfriend and then strikes up a connection with Joe (Peter Boyle), a working-class bigot with a love for guns. Five years later, Sarandon became a cult icon for her role as Janet Weiss in The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), in which her character becomes entangled with the flamboyant and eccentric Dr. Frank-N-Furter.
