Spike Lee was born in Atlanta, Georgia, to Jacqueline Carroll (née Shelton), a teacher of arts and black literature, and William James Edward Lee III, a jazz musician and composer. Lee has five younger siblings, three of whom—Joie, David, and Cinqué—have worked on various roles in his films, while a fourth, Christopher, passed away in 2014. His youngest sibling is his half-brother, Arnold. Director Malcolm D. Lee is also his cousin.
Lee attended John Dewey High School in Brooklyn’s Gravesend neighborhood and later enrolled at Morehouse College, a historically black college in Atlanta. It was at Morehouse where he made his first student film, Last Hustle in Brooklyn. He also took film courses at Clark Atlanta University and earned a Bachelor of Arts in mass communication from Morehouse.
