Samson was born on November 11, 1994, into a Christian family from Kerala. His father, Samson Viswanath, was a former police constable at Delhi Police and a retired football player who had played for Delhi in Santhosh Trophy. His mother, Ligy Viswanath, is a homemaker. His older brother, Saly Samson, has represented Kerala in Junior cricket and now works at the AG’s office.
Samson grew up in North Delhi and attended Rosary School. He was coached by Yashpal at DL DAV School. When he didn’t make the U-13 team, his father retired from the Delhi police. They then moved to Kerala for cricket. In Kerala, he trained with Biju George at Medical College Ground after being at Masters Cricket Club. Sanju Samson debuted for the Kerala Ranji team in his first-class cricket match against Vidarbha on 3 November 2011 at the age of 17. He quickly left an impression by achieving two centuries and a half-century in his first five matches the following season.
The Ranji Trophy 2013-14 was a significant season for Samson. In the first match, Assam scored 323 runs. Samson then scored 211, leading Kerala with a 39-run advantage. He hit 23 fours and 5 sixes to achieve his first double century in Ranji Trophy. After two matches, he was the top scorer with 377 runs at an average of 188.5. Throughout six matches, he scored a total of 530 runs for Kerala with an average of 58.88.
Samson reached his peak in 2019-20 by scoring a double-century in a Vijay Hazare match against Goa. The Kerala player hit an unbeaten 212 off 129 balls, setting a new record for wicket-keeper batsmen in List A cricket. He surpassed Abid Ali’s record of 208 runs from Pakistan’s one-day competition in 2018.
IPL Career
After a great start in Ranji Trophy, Sanju Samson was noticed and picked by Kolkata Knight Riders. Later, he moved to Rajasthan Royals in 2013. Sanju became important in Royals’ batting for three years. Rahul Dravid praised Samson during IPL-7, suggesting he could play for India soon.
Rajasthan Royals kept Sanju for the 2015 IPL season. He struggled to perform well, only scoring one 50+ in 15 matches. In 2016, he joined Delhi Daredevils and became their third top scorer in 2017. During IPL 2017, he scored his first T20 century against Rising Pune Supergiant on April 11 at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune. When Rajasthan returned to the IPL in January 2018, they bought him for Rs. 8 Crores. On March 29, 2019, he hit his second IPL century against Sunrisers Hyderabad – scoring 102 runs from just 55 balls with 10 fours and 4 sixes.
