Early life
In Wichita, Kansas, on June 30, 1942, Robert Duane Ballard was born. Nancy Ann was his younger sister, and Richard was his older brother. Ballard’s family relocate to southern California when he was two years old, where his father was employed as a flight test engineer. In 1967, upon being called to active duty, he request to complete his duties in the US Navy. After his request was granted, he was placed on the reserve active duty list and sent to the Navy Reserve. He was placed back in reserve status in 1970 after serving out his time on active service; he was only called up for special tasks and required training during this time in his military career. He served his full statutory term in the Navy before retiring as a commander in 1995.
