Early Life

Rebecca Sugar grew up in the Sligo Park Hills neighborhood of Silver Spring, Maryland. She attended both Montgomery Blair High School and the Visual Arts Center at Albert Einstein High School. During this time, she became a semifinalist in the Presidential Scholar competition and won Montgomery County’s prestigious Ida F. Haimovicz Visual Arts Award. At Blair, Sugar created a comic strip titled The Strip for the school newspaper, Silver Chips. Her work earned first place in the Newspaper Individual Writing and Editing Contest, and one of her comics openly criticized the school district’s new grading policy in 2005.

She later studied animation at the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York, graduating in 2009 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. While at SVA, she directed several short animated films, including Johnny Noodleneck (2008) and Singles (2009), the latter serving as her thesis film. Frequent collaborator Ian Jones-Quartey assisted with the animation and voice work for Singles, and her brother, Steven Sugar, contributed as an assistant colorist.
