Early life and Education
On July 6, 1985, Ranveer Singh Bhavnani was born into a Sindhi family in Bombay, Maharashtra, India. His parents were Anju and Jagjit Singh Bhavnani. During the Indian Partition, his grandparents relocated from Karachi, Sindh (in modern-day Pakistan) to Bombay.(5)(6) Ritika Bhavnani is his elder sister. According to Singh, he decided to delete the Bhavnani surname because he thought it would have been “too long, too many syllables,” which would have diminished his brand as a “saleable commodity.”The sister of writer and diplomat Samuel Martin Burke, who worked in Pakistan following independence, was the character actress Chand Burke, who was Singh’s paternal grandmother. Sunita Bhavnani, née Singh’s mother’s cousin, is wed to actor Anil Kapoor.
Singh took part in a number of school plays and discussions since he had always wanted to be an actor. Upon enrolling in Mumbai’s H.R. College of Commerce and Economics, Singh did, however, discover that breaking into the film industry was quite difficult. Acting was “too far-fetched” to Singh, so he concentrated on writing. He travelled to the US and graduated from Indiana University Bloomington in 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts in Telecommunications. He chose to major in theatre and take acting classes at the university.

Singh tried out for the lead in Maneesh Sharma’s romantic comedy Band Baaja Baaraat (2010), which was produced by Yash Raj Films. Producer Aditya Chopra chose him to play the role alongside Anushka Sharma after being impressed by his audition. Singh portrayed himself as a normal Delhi boy in the role of Bittoo Sharma. He spoke with students on the Delhi University campus in order to get ready for the part. Trade journalists had doubts about the movie’s commercial appeal, yet it turned out to be a sleeper hit. Anupama Chopra of NDTV commended Singh’s performance, saying that he was “pitch perfect in the role of the uncouth but good-hearted small town slacker”.
