Deol was born on October 19, 1957, into a Punjabi Jat family in the village of Sahnewal in East Punjab, India. His parents were Bollywood actor Dharmendra and Prakash Kaur. He was raised in a loving and caring environment, though he was a mischievous child who frequently got slapped by his mother for misbehaving. He was afraid of his father, whom he respected and held in high regard, and he obeyed him. Deol attended Sacred Heart Boys High School in Maharashtra before continuing his education at Ramniranjan Anandilal Poddar College of Commerce and Economics in Mumbai.
