In 1996, Kalyan debuted as an actor in Akkada Ammayi Ikkada Abbayi. The following year saw the release of his second film, Gokulamlo Seeta. His next role was in Tholi Prema (1999), directed by A. Karunakaran, which took home six Nandi Awards and the National Award for Best Picture that year. Following Tholi Prema, Kalyan portrayed a kickboxer in Thammudu. Thammudu, written and directed by P. A. Arun Prasad, was released on July 15, 1999. He appeared in Badri, Puri Jagannadh’s debut feature film, on April 20, 2000. composed by Ramana Gogula and produced by T. Trivikrama Rao.

On April 19, 2009, while on a roadshow in Vizag, Kalyan suffered a sunstroke that left him experiencing episodes of vomiting. On March 14, 2014, Kalyan established the Jana Sena Party, a political organization. He wrote a book called Ism, which is also the Jana Sena party’s doctrine.He discussed the problems facing both Telugu states with then-BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi and offered his support. In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, he conducted a protracted campaign for the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and BJP coalition. With the Hindi phrase “Stop Congress, Save the Country,” he expressed his opposition to the Congress party’s rule: Congress Hatao, Desh Bachao. In 1997, a year after making his screen debut, Kalyan wed Nandini. Kalyan began living with Renu Desai, his co-star from Badri, in 2001; their son, Akira Nandan, was born in 2004.When Nandini filed a bigamy case against Kalyan in June 2007, she claimed that he had remarried without divorcing her. Kalyan refuted this claim, saying he had never married Desai, and a Visakhapatnam magistrate court dismissed the case for lack of proof. After that, in July of 2007, Kalyan filed for divorce in a Visakhapatnam family court, alleging that Nandini had abandoned him right away following their marriage. Her attorney refuted this accusation. Their divorce was finalized in August 2008, and Kalyan paid a one-time settlement of ₹5 crore as alimony.

After living with Desai for eight years, Kalyan got married to her in 2009. In 2010, their daughter Aadya was born. In 2012, the pair filed for official divorce, ending their union. She went on to say that their breakup was due to personal issues, but she and Kalyan are still extremely friends. While filming Teen Maar (2011), Kalyan got to know Russian citizen Anna Lezhneva, his third wife.They got married in September 2013 at a Hyderabad Sub-Registrar Office in accordance with the Special Marriage Act.
