In 1996, Kalyan debuted as an actor in Akkada Ammayi Ikkada Abbayi. The following year saw the release of his second film, Gokulamlo Seeta. His next role was in Tholi Prema (1999), directed by A. Karunakaran, which took home six Nandi Awards and the National Award for Best Picture that year. Following Tholi Prema, Kalyan portrayed a kickboxer in Thammudu. Thammudu, written and directed by P. In 1997, a year after making his screen debut, Kalyan wed Nandini. Kalyan began living with Renu Desai, his co-star from Badri, in 2001; their son, Akira Nandan, was born in 2004.When Nandini filed a bigamy case against Kalyan in June 2007, she claimed that he had remarried without divorcing her. Kalyan refuted this claim, saying he had never married Desai, and a Visakhapatnam magistrate court dismissed the case for lack of proof.
