His family experienced financial difficulties after his father lost his banking job during the Asian financial crisis (IMF crisis). Although he initially attended the French language department at Gwacheon Foreign Language High School, he struggled to find interest in academics. It wasn’t until his third year that he began seriously considering a future in acting.
He went on to study acting and film at Dong-ah Institute of Media and Arts, driven by his love for cinema. At 20, he landed his first lead role as Deokbae in a school theater workshop production of Taxi Driver, written by director Jang Jin.
