Bloom was born to Sonia Bloom (née Copeland) on January 13, 1977, in Canterbury, Kent, and was named after the 16th-century composer Orlando Gibbons. He has an older sister, Samantha. Initially, Bloom believed that his biological father was his mother’s husband, the anti-apartheid novelist Harry Bloom, who passed away when Orlando was four. At age thirteen, his mother revealed that his biological father was actually Colin Stone, a family friend and Harry’s student. Following Harry Bloom’s death, Stone became Orlando’s legal guardian.
Raised in the Church of England, Bloom attended St Peter’s Methodist Primary School, then The King’s School, before completing his education at St Edmund’s School Canterbury.
