Hiltz raced the 800 meters in 2:51.54 (2008), the 400 meters in 1:07.41 (2009), the long jump in 3.94 m (2008), and the high jump in 1.37 m (2009) while he was a student at Aptos Middle School. Hiltz earned six Central Coast Section titles in the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) while attending Aptos High School.
Collegiate career
As a Division I NCAA All-American, Hiltz has won six times. Prior to moving to Arkansas in 2016, Hiltz started their collegiate career at Oregon in 2014. With a timing of 4:38.47 for the mile, Hiltz, an Oregon Duck, placed eighth at the 2015 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships. After competing for the Oregon Ducks in the 2015 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Hiltz won the track and field titles for both the NCAA Division 1 and Pac-12 Conferences.
Hiltz transferred to Arkansas following the 2015 season. With a time of 10:59.22 in the DMR (Distance Medley Relay) at the 2016 NCAA Division I Championship, Hiltz and her Arkansas Razorbacks colleagues Daina Harper, Therese Haiss, and Jessica Kamilos concluded fifth.

Professional
After running a 1500-meter time that placed in the top 100 worldwide, Hiltz signed a contract with Adidas in 2018 and began training with The Mission Athletics Club, which is now known as The Golden Coast Track Club, located in California. They ran a then-personal best 2:05.16 in the 800 meters in January of that same year. Hiltz finished fourth in 4:32.29 in the Aetna Falmouth Mile later in the year. They then competed in the Memphis Ed Murphey Mile, finishing in fifth place with a time of 4:32.59. They finished 12th in 4:39.23 at the Bay Shore Hoka One Long Island Mile as well. With a personal best time of 4:09.14 in the 1500 meters, Hiltz placed 92nd overall.
Personal life
Hiltz arranged Virtual Pride 5k events in 2020 and gave the money raised to The Trevor Project, a nonprofit organization that was established in 1998 with an emphasis on preventing suicide among LGBTQ adolescents.
