Nicholas Alexander Castellanos is an American professional baseball right fielder and third baseman for the Philadelphia Phillies of Major League Baseball. He previously played for the Detroit Tigers, Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds.

Early life

Michelle and Jorge Castellanos reared their son in South Florida. Because of his father, he is of Cuban origin. The family of his mother is from Michigan. played baseball in Davie, Florida’s little league system. Playing baseball for the American Heritage School baseball club in Plantation, Florida, Castellanos went to school there. In his sophomore year, American Heritage took home the Florida state championship. Before entering his junior year, Castellanos moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida’s Archbishop McCarthy High School.

After concluding his senior season with a.542 batting average, 34 runs scored, 41 runs batted in (RBIs), and 22 stolen bases while leading his team to the Class 4A state championship, he was awarded the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Florida.  He was named the 2009 Under Armour All-America Baseball Game’s Most Valuable Player after recording three runs, four doubles, and three RBIs at Wrigley Field. Castellanos was selected the Class 6A-5A-4A Player of the Year by the Sun-Sentinel.

Professional career

In the 2010 Major League Baseball draft, Castellanos was chosen by the Detroit Tigers with the 44th overall choice in the second round. Before the draft, Baseball America ranked him as the fourteenth greatest overall prospect and the third best power hitting prospect. His devotion to the University of Miami caused him to slip. At that time, the largest signing bonus ever awarded to a player selected after the first round was $3.45 million, which he received when he signed with the Tigers. The trade was nearly nullified when, on August 15, 2010, three minutes after the deadline at midnight, the Tigers’ email to the Commissioner of Baseball’s office was received; at 11:59 p.m., a text message regarding the deal was received by the Commissioner’s office.

Despite Castellanos’s high school shortstop position, the Tigers moved him to third base during his professional career. During that season, Castellanos played in seven games for the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League’s Gulf Coast Tigers. Baseball America ranked Castellanos as the 65th greatest baseball prospect prior to the 2011 season. He was a player with the Midwest League’s Class-A West Michigan Whitecaps. Castellanos led the Midwest League with 158 hits while with the Whitecaps, batting.312 with seven home runs and 76 RBIs. He was also voted the Tigers’ minor league position player of the year.

Liam, the son of Castellanos, was born in August 2013. In 2015, he wed Vanessa Hernandez, the mother of his son and his high school love. 2017 saw their divorce. In 2017, Castellanos began dating Jessica Gomez, and on February 8, 2021, they were married. May 2022 saw the birth of their son Otto. Ryan, Castellanos’ younger brother, was a baseball player for Nova Southeastern University. Ryan was chosen by the Tigers in the 25th round of the 2015 MLB draft; Nick made the announcement himself. Their father was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2017.
