Early life

Michelle and Jorge Castellanos reared their son in South Florida. Because of his father, he is of Cuban origin. The family of his mother is from Michigan. played baseball in Davie, Florida’s little league system. Playing baseball for the American Heritage School baseball club in Plantation, Florida, Castellanos went to school there. In his sophomore year, American Heritage took home the Florida state championship. Before entering his junior year, Castellanos moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida’s Archbishop McCarthy High School.

After concluding his senior season with a.542 batting average, 34 runs scored, 41 runs batted in (RBIs), and 22 stolen bases while leading his team to the Class 4A state championship, he was awarded the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Florida.  He was named the 2009 Under Armour All-America Baseball Game’s Most Valuable Player after recording three runs, four doubles, and three RBIs at Wrigley Field. In the 2010 Major League Baseball draft, Castellanos was chosen by the Detroit Tigers with the 44th overall choice in the second round. Before the draft, Baseball America ranked him as the fourteenth greatest overall prospect and the third best power hitting prospect. His devotion to the University of Miami caused him to slip. At that time, the largest signing bonus ever awarded to a player selected after the first round was $3.45 million, which he received when he signed with the Tigers.
