Early life
Orlando, Florida is where Eflin was born. Ashley, Eflin’s older sister, passed away at age seven from leukemia. Eflin has stated that his greatest influence is his other sister, Candace. Career
Eflin was chosen by the San Diego Padres with the 33rd overall pick in the first round of the 2012 MLB draft, after he completed his high school career. Eflin chose to sign a $1.2 million signing bonus with the Padres instead of enrolling at UCF. With a 0-1 win-loss record and a 7.71 ERA in seven innings, Eflin started his professional debut in 2012 with the AZL Padres in the Arizona Fall League. After getting mononucleosis, he missed work. Though injury worries had already started to surface, evaluators believed that he had a decent opportunity to have a successful major league career after his first season. He pitched for the Class A Fort Wayne TinCaps the following year during his first complete professional season.

He is renowned for his ability to command his pitches, walking very few batters, and for depending on a sinker (93 mph (150 km/h) and slider (88 mph (142 km/h)) combination to get groundball outs. Eflin has always tended to pitch to contact, but in 2018 he started to throw harder in an effort to record strikeouts and smash pitches past hitters. After having trouble in 2019, he strayed from that strategy, and by 2020, he had essentially gone back to how he attacked hitters. He started using a 79-mile-per-hour (127-kilometer-per-hour) curveball more frequently in 2020, which reduced his need for a changeup.
