She began her acting career as a child in the late 1960s, appearing in various commercials and guest roles on television. From 1974 to 1983, she portrayed Laura Ingalls Wilder, the second-oldest daughter of Charles Ingalls (played by Michael Landon), on the NBC series Little House on the Prairie. During the show’s run, Gilbert starred in several TV movies, such as The Diary of Anne Frank (1980) and The Miracle Worker (1979). As an adult, she focused mainly on television films. Between 2009 and 2010, Gilbert performed as Caroline “Ma” Ingalls in the touring production of Little House on the Prairie, the Musical. In 2012, she competed on season fourteen of Dancing with the Stars. Gilbert served as president of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) from 2001 to 2005.

Early Life and Family

Gilbert was born in Los Angeles, California, on May 8, 1964, to Kathy Wood and David Darlington, who were newly engaged at the time. She was placed for adoption immediately after birth and was adopted the following day by actor and comedian Paul Gilbert and his wife, dancer and actress Barbara Crane, the daughter of The Honeymooners creator Harry Crane. The Gilberts later adopted a son, Jonathan, who also starred on Little House on the Prairie.

Her parents divorced when she was 6 years old. Her mother then married attorney Harold Abeles, and together they had a biological daughter, Sara Rebecca Abeles, known professionally as Sara Gilbert, born on January 29, 1975. On February 13, 1976, Paul Gilbert passed away. While Melissa was told he died from a stroke, she later learned that he had been a VA patient suffering from chronic pain and had taken his own life.
