The club participates in the Premier League, the highest level of English football. Nicknamed the Red Devils, they were founded as Newton Heath LYR Football Club in 1878, but changed their name to Manchester United in 1902. After a spell playing in Clayton, Manchester, the club moved to their current stadium, Old Trafford, in 1910.
Manchester United
In the UK, Manchester United has won 20 league titles, 13 FA Cups, and 6 League Cups. They also won international competitions like the European Cup three times. The team’s first successes were led by Ernest Mangnall and later by Sir Matt Busby. Busby formed a young team called the Busby Babes that won titles but tragically many players died in a plane crash. After rebuilding, they won more titles in the 1960s with players like George Best and Bobby Charlton. Alex Ferguson took over from Busby, winning 38 trophies including league titles and Champions League wins. Under Ferguson in 1998-99, they were the first English club to win the treble of Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League. In 2016-17 under José Mourinho, they added the Europa League title to their achievements.
Manchester United is among the most valuable and extensively supported soccer teams globally. The club has rivalries with Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal, and Leeds United. It was publicly traded on the London Stock Exchange in 1991 but went private in 2005 following a purchase by American businessman Malcolm Glazer for nearly £800 million, with more than £500 million in borrowed funds becoming the club’s debt. Starting in 2012, certain shares of the club were traded on the New York Stock Exchange, with the Glazer family maintaining ultimate ownership and authority over the club.

Real Madrid overtake Manchester United as the most valuable soccer club in the world, according to Forbes
Forbes has released its latest rankings of the most valuable soccer teams globally, revealing that Real Madrid has overtaken Manchester United to claim the top spot. With a current valuation of $6.6 billion, the La Liga powerhouse is poised to compete for their 15th Champions League title on June 1, following a growth of nine percent in the past year. Speculations suggest that with the potential addition of Kylian Mbappe to their roster in the upcoming summer, Real Madrid’s position at the summit may remain unchallenged for the foreseeable future.
Meanwhile, Manchester United has slipped to second place after Jim Ratcliffe acquired a partial stake in the team for a record-breaking $6.5 billion, inclusive of operating rights. Despite this, the English Premier League boasts 12 clubs in the top rankings, underlining the league’s financial strength with its TV deal’s annual value averaging double that of the next highest deal. The Premier League leads with an AAV of $4.215 million, followed by La Liga at $2.191 million.
