Born on 9 September 1985 in Zadar, Croatia, Luka Modrić was raised in the hamlet of Modrići, part of Zaton Obrovački, located on the southern slopes of Velebit mountain, north of Zadar. He is the oldest child of Stipe Modrić and Radojka Dopuđ, who both worked in a knitwear factory. Modrić spent much of his early childhood in a stone house owned by his paternal grandfather, whom he was named after, and he began herding goats at the age of five.
