Lisa Nandy Biography: Lisa Eva Nandy born August 9, 1979 is a British Labour Party politician who has served as Secretary of State for Culture, Media, and Sport since 2024. Early life and education
Lisa Eva Nandy was born in Manchester on August 9, 1979, as the daughter of The Hon. Luise (née Byers) and Indian Bengali professor Dipak Nandy. Frank Byers, her maternal grandfather, was a Liberal MP who went on to become a life lord in the House of Lords. Lord Byers went on to become the Liberal Party’s Leader in the House of Lords from 1967 until 1984. Nandy was raised in both Manchester and Bury. She attended the exclusive, fee-paying Moor Allerton Preparatory School before moving on to Parrs Wood High School, a co-educational comprehensive school in East Didsbury, Manchester, and then Holy Cross College in Bury. She received a master’s degree in public policy from Birkbeck after studying politics at Newcastle University and graduating in 2001.

Career
Nandy worked as a researcher and caseworker for Neil Gerrard, the Labour MP for Walthamstow. Following that, Nandy worked as a researcher at the homelessness charity Centrepoint from 2003 to 2005, and then as a senior policy adviser at The Children’s Society from 2005 until her election in 2010, where she specialised in issues affecting young refugees, as well as an adviser to the Children’s Commissioner for England and the Independent Asylum Commission. From 2006 to 2010, she was a Labour councillor on Hammersmith and Fulham London Borough Council, representing the Hammersmith Broadway ward. As a councillor, she was a member of the housing shadow cabinet.

Parliamentary career
In February 2010, Nandy was chosen as the Labour Party’s parliamentary candidate for Wigan from an all-female shortlist. Nandy was elected to Parliament as Wigan’s MP in 2010 with 48.5% of the vote and a majority of 10,487. She was nominated to the Education Select Committee in July 2010 and was named Parliamentary Private Secretary to Tessa Jowell, the Shadow Olympics Minister, in October 2010. In 2012, she succeeded Catherine McKinnell as Shadow Children and Young Families Minister. In October 2013, she was named shadow charity minister. Nandy was re-elected as MP for Wigan in the 2015 general election, with a 52.2% rise in vote share and a 14,236 majority. Following Labour’s general election defeat and Ed Miliband’s subsequent resignation.
As party leader, there was speculation in the media that Nandy would run in the leadership election. Nandy declined and endorsed Andy Burnham. Owen Jones stated in August 2015 that he pushed Nandy to run for leadership, but her son’s recent birth prohibited her from doing so. In September 2015, Nandy was named Shadow Energy Secretary in the Shadow Cabinet. In June 2016, she resigned from her position, as did several of her coworkers. Following these resignations, Nandy was approached by Labour MPs who wanted her to challenge Jeremy Corbyn in a leadership contest.
