Lars Ulrich was born on December 26, 1963, in Gentofte, Denmark, into an upper-middle-class family. His parents are Lone (née Sylvester-Hvid) and professional tennis player Torben Ulrich. He grew up in Hellerup, at Lundevangsvej 12. His grandfather Einer Ulrich was also a tennis player, while his paternal grandmother, Ulla Meyer, came from a Jewish family. Because of this heritage, Ulrich’s grandfather faced Nazi persecution during World War II.
Ulrich’s godfather was jazz saxophonist Dexter Gordon, and he grew up alongside musician Neneh Cherry, with whom he was childhood friends. A pivotal moment in Ulrich’s life came in February 1973, when his father secured passes for a Deep Purple concert at the same Copenhagen venue where he was playing a tennis tournament. When one of his father’s friends couldn’t attend, nine-year-old Lars went instead.
