Lance Edward Gunderson Armstrong was born on September 18, 1971, in Richardson, Texas, at Methodist Hospital. Linda Armstrong Kelly (née Gayle Mooneyham), his mother, grew up in Oak Cliff. Armstrong takes his name after Lance Rentzel, a Dallas Cowboys wide receiver. Lance’s parents split when he was two years old, and when his mother remarried Terry Keith Armstrong, Lance adopted his stepfather’s surname. He was a senior at Plano East High School.
Career
In the 1987-1988 Tri-Fed/Texas (“Tri-Fed” was the original name of USA Triathlon), Armstrong was ranked as the number-one triathlete in the 19-and-under group; second place went to Chann McRae, who later became a US Postal Service cycling teammate and the 2002 USPRO national champion. Armstrong’s total points as an amateur in 1987 were higher than those of five professionals ahead of him. Lance Armstrong began his professional triathlon career at the age of 16 and went on to win the national sprint-course triathlon championship in 1989 and 1990 at the ages of 18 and 19, respectively.
