Early life

In Southwark, London, Rachel Howard and Adam Marshall gave birth to Archy Marshall. The Czech Republic is home to his family. Marshall claimed in an interview with Rob Fitzpatrick of The Guardian that he struggled with discipline as a child and refused to attend school. He spent most of his childhood alternating between his mother’s home in East Dulwich and his father’s home in Peckham; the latter was far more rule-abiding than the former. Marshall remembers that he used to skip school and hide in his room unless his father forcefully carried him there. He was assigned a tutor in a private home once he became 13 years old. Later, he was admitted to study art at the Brit School, where.

Marshall claims that he underwent testing at London’s Maudsley Hospital for a number of mental health issues. He says he was damaged by the exams, that he despised everyone, that he would spend hours hiding in his room, and that the majority of the time the physicians, counselors, and psychiatrists were mistaken. In certain of his lyrics, he makes reference to his mental health problems, including sadness and sleeplessness. In an NPR interview, Marshall described how his parents always supported creativity, so he frequently made art in a variety of media. He stated how important visual art is to him in particular and how he painstakingly designs his music videos and album art to reflect his unique style.

Career

Marshall recorded two hits as “Zoo Kid” between 2008 and 2011, while attending Forest Hill School and later the Brit School with longtime partner Jamie Isaac. His “Bluewave” mixtape, U.F.O.W.A.V.E., is the embodiment of the musical genre he invented. Marshall started performing as King Krule in July 2011 at a festival in Hyères, France. His debut EP of the same name was released later that year. His stage name, despite what some people may say, was inspired by the Elvis Presley movie King Creole, not the Donkey Kong Country video game character King K. Rool. The BBC revealed that he was a nominee for the Sound of 2013 on December 9, 2012.

He uploaded a music video for “A Lizard State” on January 8, 2014, and it has received over 800,000 views on YouTube. King Krule adorned the cover of The Fader’s ninetieth issue in February 2014. He published an album called A New Place 2 Drown in December 2015 under the name Archy Marshall. The CD consists of 12 songs, a 208-page book filled with narrative and visual art, and a 10-minute documentary. For this endeavor, he collaborated alongside his brother Jack Marshall.According to Marshall, he intended the record to be both viscerally and aurally appealing, as he stated in an interview with NPR.To distinguish between the two distinct types of music, he released the album under the moniker Archy Marshall instead of King Krule.

Musical style and influences

King Krule has drawn attention from numerous critics and journalists for his extraordinary transcendence and appropriation of various genres. Hip hop, darkwave, and post-punk have also been used to characterize his work, but mostly jazz derivatives like punk jazz and jazz fusion. Some of his songs have also been compared to dub, jazz rap, and trip hop by writers.[32] While his songs are primarily ballads with major seventh chords, according to Allmusic’s Jason Lymangrover, Archy’s voice and character also have a “grittiness” to them, which describes him as “the type of kid who would be quick to throw a punch without asking questions.”

His sound has been compared to Edwyn Collins and Morrissey. His godfather, the band’s former drummer Dave Ruffy, is one among his many inspirations. Other influences include Fela Kuti, Fela Presley, Gene Vincent, Josef K, Chet Baker, Aztec Camera, and The Penguin Cafe Orchestra. In an interview with The Guardian, Marshall claimed that The Libertines and Pixies had influenced him when he first started playing music. According to an interview with Flaunt magazine, romance, sex, violence, conflict, and sadness are common themes in Marshall’s lyrics. Marshall went on to explain that these topics relate to his literary interests, saying that “poems, songs, and literature are all very similar.” I used to read a lot of poetry and spend a long time trying to figure out what it meant.

Personal life

Along with English photographer Charlotte Patmore, Marshall is a co-parent. Patmore has worked with him on photographic and video projects for a number of years. has also directed and produced several of his music videos, including the one for the song “Cadet Limbo”. Patmore directed the music video Hey World! in 2019, which preceded the release of Marshall’s album Man Alive!. Their daughter was born in 2019 and is their only kid.
