Khabib Nurmagomedov was born into an Avar family on September 20, 1988, in the village of Sildi, located in the Tsumadinsky District of the Dagestan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (ASSR) within the Soviet Union. He has an older brother named Magomed and a younger sister named Amina. His father’s family moved to Kirovaul, where his father converted the ground floor of their two-story home into a gym. Khabib grew up alongside his siblings and cousins, and his interest in martial arts was sparked by watching the gym’s students train. At just nine years old, Khabib’s training began with a unique experience—wrestling a bear.
Wrestling was a common pursuit for children in Dagestan, and Khabib began his own wrestling training at the age of eight under the guidance of his father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov. Abdulmanap, a decorated athlete and veteran of the Soviet Army, had wrestled from a young age before expanding his expertise to judo and sambo during his military service.
