Karl Pilkington was born in Sale, Cheshire (now part of Greater Manchester) on 23 September 1972. He grew up on the Racecourse Estate in Sale and has an older brother and sister. While he had a close bond with his parents—both of whom held multiple jobs—he has said he was not close to his siblings due to the age gap of about 10 years. In interviews, Pilkington has admitted that it had been “years” since he last spoke to them.
He attended Ashton-on-Mersey School but had little interest in academics and often clashed with the education system. Pilkington has stated that he went to school primarily to sell pirated video games to classmates rather than to learn, famously saying, “I wasn’t going to school to learn, I was going to earn.” At age 15, he left school and began working as a cassette and disk printer through a Youth Training Scheme.
