Mason began the season as San Francisco’s No. 2 running back, trailing only Christian McCaffrey. While the third-year athlete was sure to see snaps in Kyle Shanahan’s offense, McCaffrey was expected to receive the majority of the reps. McCaffrey, meanwhile, was ruled out of the primetime game against New York less than two hours before it began. While the star running back was limited in the days preceding up to Monday, the word that he will miss the season opener came as a surprise.
