Early Life

James Earl Carter Jr. was born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia, at the Wise Sanitarium, where his mother worked as a registered nurse, making him the first American president born in a hospital. He is the eldest child of Bessie Lillian Gordy and James Earl Carter Sr., and a descendant of Thomas Carter, an English immigrant who settled in Virginia in 1635. In Georgia, generations of Carters worked as cotton farmers. At the time of his birth, Plains was a small town with around 600 residents, and his father was a successful local businessman who owned a general store and invested in farmland.

During Carter’s early years, the family moved several times before settling on a dirt road in Archery, a community primarily composed of impoverished African American families. He has three younger siblings: Gloria, Ruth, and Billy. Although his mother was often busy with work, Carter maintained a close relationship with his parents. His father, who held pro-segregation views, nonetheless allowed Carter to befriend the children of black farmhands. As a teenager, Carter was enterprising, managing his own acre of land to grow, package, and sell peanuts, and even renting out a section of tenant housing he had purchased.
