Early Life

Holly Hunter was born in Conyers, Georgia, to Marguerite “Dee Dee” (née Catledge), a homemaker, and Charles Edwin Hunter, a part-time sporting goods salesman and farmer who operated a 250-acre farm. The youngest of six children, Hunter showed early interest in acting, landing her first role as Helen Keller in a fifth-grade school production.  She lost hearing in her left ear due to a childhood case of mumps, a condition that occasionally affects her work—some film scenes must be adjusted so that she can face the camera with her right ear. Despite this, she has never let it hinder her career.

Hunter began acting in high school, performing in local stage productions of Oklahoma!, Man of La Mancha, and Fiddler on the Roof. She later earned a drama degree from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, where she also worked in local theater, frequently playing ingénue roles at what was then called the City Players, now City Theatre.
