Diplo was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, to Barbara Jean (née Cox) and Thomas Pentz, and is of German and English ancestry. He grew up mostly in Miami, Florida, where the local Miami bass sound heavily influenced his early production style. After graduating from Hendersonville High School in Tennessee, he attended the University of Central Florida (UCF) in 1997. During college, he DJed at WPRK, the student radio station at Rollins College. He later transferred to Temple University in Philadelphia, where he began gaining recognition as a local DJ.
At age 20, Diplo spent time in India, traveling with limited funds and a used Enfield motorcycle. He explored regions like Ladakh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, and Gujarat, collecting records and immersing himself in traditional Indian music, including sitar and tabla performances. Upon returning to the U.S., Diplo partnered with DJ Low Budget to form Hollertronix in 2003. The duo hosted underground parties in Philadelphia, giving them control over their music sets. Their events led to the release of various mixtapes, including Never Scared, which was named one of The New York Times’ top ten albums of 2003.
