Early Life
Blaydes was born in Naperville, Illinois, and raised in Chicago with his four siblings. He began wrestling at De La Salle Institute, where he won a state title in his senior year, finishing with an undefeated 44–0 record. Over four years, Blaydes accumulated a 95–18 record with 121 takedowns. He also played American football as a defensive end for De La Salle. Blaydes earned a full wrestling scholarship to Northern Illinois University, where he went 9–2 as a redshirt freshman. He later transferred to Harper College, where he won the NJCAA National Championship as a redshirt sophomore. After beginning his amateur mixed martial arts career, Blaydes left school to focus on MMA full-time. Blaydes was also an IKF amateur champion.
Mixed Martial Arts Career
Blaydes started his professional career with an 8–0 amateur record before turning pro in 2014. He went on a 5–0 run, with all his victories coming via TKO, which earned him a contract with the UFC. Blaydes made his UFC debut against Francis Ngannou on April 10, 2016, at UFC Fight Night 86. He lost the fight via TKO at the end of the second round due to a doctor stoppage.
His next fight was against Cody East on October 1, 2016, at UFC Fight Night 96. Blaydes won via TKO in the second round, earning his first UFC Performance of the Night bonus. Blaydes then faced Adam Milstead on February 4, 2017, at UFC Fight Night 104. After dominating the first round, Blaydes won the fight via TKO when Milstead suffered a knee injury. However, the result was later changed to a No Contest after Blaydes tested positive for marijuana.
