Craig Ferguson was born in Stobhill Hospital in Glasgow’s Springburn area on May 17, 1962. He is the son of Robert Ferguson (a postal worker and Scottish Nationalist) and Janet Ferguson (a primary school teacher). When Craig was six months old, his family relocated to a house in Cumbernauld, a newly developed town intended to improve housing conditions for Glaswegians displaced after World War II. Ferguson grew up there and described his childhood as being “chubby and bullied.”

He attended Muirfield Primary School and later Cumbernauld High School, but left formal education at age 16 to pursue an apprenticeship as an electronics technician with the Burroughs Corporation. Ferguson has three siblings: an older brother, an older sister, and a younger sister, Lynn Ferguson Tweddle. Lynn is also in the entertainment industry as a comedian, presenter, and actress—best known for voicing Mac in Chicken Run (2000) and working as a writer on The Late Late Show until mid-2011.
