He is a second cousin to Jackie Bezos, the mother of Jeff Bezos, the billionaire entrepreneur. Growing up in nearby Pearsall, Texas, in Frio County, Strait’s father was a junior high school math teacher and the owner of a 2,000-acre cattle ranch outside Big Wells, Texas. The family spent weekends and summers working on the ranch.

George, along with his brother John “Buddy” Jr. (1950–2009), stayed with their father and continued ranching. For much of his early life, George worked on the ranch alongside his older brother and father. Strait’s musical journey began during his time at Pearsall High School, where he played in a rock and roll garage band called The Stoics, drawing inspiration from The Beatles and other British Invasion-era rock bands.
