Background and youth sports
Hocker, who was born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana, started running competitively at an early age and set a record in the eighth grade, finishing the mile in 4:36. During his time at Cathedral High School, he won numerous races at the state and national levels. He won the IHSAA Cross Country State Finals in 2018 after placing second in 2017. 2018 saw him win the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships and place second at the Nike Cross Nationals. The University of Oregon was his college of choice, beating out offers from numerous other universities such as Northern Arizona University and Indiana University.
Collegiate competition
In 2019 and 2021, Hocker played for the Oregon Ducks. He took first place in the mile (3:53.71) and the three-kilometer (7:46.15) events at the 2021 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships. In an event held at the Randal Tyson Track Center earlier that year, on February 12, 2021, he ran a career best of 3:50.55 in the mile, coming in just behind teammate Cooper Teare. The two recorded the seventh and eighth fastest times ever for the indoor mile. Hocker beat NCAA record holder Yared Nuguse to win the 1500 meters at the 2021 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships in a time of 3:35.35. In 13:18.9, he secured the fourth position in the 5000 meters as well.
