Junior career

Nakashima reached as high as the third spot in the world rankings as a junior. He finished the year as the winner of the ITF Junior Masters, the year-end competition for the top-ranked junior singles players, after winning two championships on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) junior circuit.

Collegiate career

Nakashima enrolled in the University of Virginia in January 2019 at the age of 17, having graduated from High Bluff Academy in San Diego one semester ahead of schedule. He concluded the season with a 17–5 singles record and a 20–3 doubles record while attending UVA. was named to the All-ACC Academic Team, won the ACC-Freshman of the Year title, and was a member of the All-ACC First Team at the conclusion of the season. Professional career

After receiving a wildcard into his first ATP main draw event in February 2020, Nakashima defeated Jiří Veselý and Cameron Norrie to get to the quarterfinals, where he was defeated by Yoshihito Nishioka. Later in the year, Nakashima made his Grand Slam main draw debut at the US Open as a wildcard, defeating Paolo Lorenzi before losing to Alexander Zverev, the fifth seed and eventual runner-up. At Wimbledon, Nakashima achieved her first-ever Grand Slam main draw qualification. Taylor Fritz, a fellow countryman and the 31st seed, defeated him in the first round.

Nakashima advanced to his first Los Cabos final, where he was defeated by first seed Cameron Norrie in the end despite defeating J. J. Wolf, fourth seed Sam Querrey, fifth seed Jordan Thompson (who saved three match points), and second seed John Isner. With this run, 19-year-old Nakashima made history by being the youngest American to make it to an ATP final since Taylor Fritz, then 18 years old, reached the Memphis Open final in 2016.
