Early life and background
Ashleigh Jacinta Barty, affectionately known as “Ash,” was born on April 24, 1996, in Ipswich, Queensland, to Josie and Robert Barty. Her father grew up in Bowen, a rural town in North Queensland, where he represented Queensland and Australia in golf before working at the State Library of Queensland. Her mother, the daughter of English immigrants, was also a talented golfer who represented Queensland in her youth and later pursued a career as a radiographer. Through her great-grandmother, Ashleigh is connected to the Indigenous Australian Ngaragu people, the Aboriginal community of southern New South Wales and northeastern Victoria.
Barty was raised in Springfield, a suburb of Ipswich, and attended Woodcrest State College during her childhood. She has two older sisters, Sara and Ali. As a youngster, Ashleigh also played netball but chose to focus on tennis because she thought netball was more of a “girls’ game” and because her sisters were better at netball than she was. From the age of four, Barty trained under her longtime junior coach, Jim Joyce, at the West Brisbane Tennis Centre.
