Mackie gained recognition and a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Actor for his role in the LGBTQ drama Brother to Brother. That same year, he appeared in The Manchurian Candidate, the Spike Lee TV film Sucker Free City, and the sports drama Million Dollar Baby. Mackie starred in Half Nelson (2006), and in 2008, he featured in the action-thriller Eagle Eye and earned another Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in The Hurt Locker.

His theater credits include Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Drowning Crow, McReele, A Soldier’s Play, and Talk by Carl Hancock Rux, the latter of which earned him an Obie Award in 2002. Mackie made his film debut in 2002, playing the character Papa Doc in Eminem’s debut film 8 Mile, where he was part of the group Leaders of the Free World. He garnered critical acclaim for his role in The Hurt Locker (2009), which earned him a nomination for Best Supporting Actor at the Independent Spirit Awards. Anthony Mackie was born on September 23, 1978, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Martha (née Gordon) and Willie Mackie Sr., a carpenter who owned Mackie Roofing. His brother, Calvin Mackie, is a former associate professor of engineering at Tulane University and now works with the Louisiana Recovery Authority. Mackie attended Warren Easton Senior High School and the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA). He graduated from the high school drama program at the North Carolina School of the Arts (NCSA) in 1997. Later, he earned his degree from the Juilliard School’s Drama Division, where he was part of Group 30 (1997–2001), alongside actors Tracie Thoms and Lee Pace.
