Manganiello was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Susan and Charles Manganiello. His mother has Croatian, German, and Armenian roots, while his father hails from Massachusetts. Raised in Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania, Manganiello’s ancestral history was further explored on the February 7, 2023, episode of PBS’s Finding Your Roots. It was revealed that Manganiello’s legal paternal grandfather, Emilio Manganiello, was not his biological grandfather. His biological paternal lineage traces back to African-American man William Henry Cutler and white woman Nellie Alton. Cutler and Alton’s mixed-race African-American son is Manganiello’s biological grandfather. Through this discovery, researchers traced Manganiello’s ancestry to his great-great-great-great-great-grandfather, Plato Turner, an African slave who fought in the Continental Army during the American Revolution.
