Nathan Fillion was born on March 27, 1971, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He is the son of Cookie (Early) and Bob Fillion, both retired English teachers, and has an older brother named Jeff. His father has French-Canadian heritage, while his mother is of English, German, Finnish, and Norwegian descent. Fillion attended Holy Trinity Catholic High School, Concordia University College of Alberta, and the University of Alberta. Before moving to New York City in 1994, he was involved in improv theatre, performing with Rapid Fire Theatre’s Theatresports and participating in the improvised soap opera Die-Nasty. He also appeared in the TV movie Ordeal in the Arctic (1993), starring Richard Chamberlain, and in Strange and Rich (1994). Fillion’s first regular television role was on the daytime soap opera One Life to Live (1968), where he portrayed Joey Buchanan. His performance earned him a Daytime Emmy Award nomination in 1996.

Fillion was born in Edmonton, Alberta, on March 27, 1971, to Robert “Bob” Fillion and June “Cookie” Early, both retired English teachers. His paternal family is part of the Quebec diaspora in Fall River, Massachusetts, while his maternal grandparents were of Norwegian and Finnish descent. He grew up in the Mill Woods area of Edmonton and attended Holy Trinity Catholic High School, Concordia University College of Alberta, and the University of Alberta, where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Society. Fillion became a U.S. citizen in 1997.
