Early life

Alex and Elena, immigrant Russians, gave birth to Popyrin in Sydney. He has two sisters, Sonia and Anna, and a brother, Anthony. Junior career

In 2011, Popyrin took home the u12s National Claycourt Doubles Championship and the Australian u12s Grasscourt Championship alongside Chase Ferguson. In that identical year, he participated in the Tennis Europe u12 circuit and emerged victorious in the Stork International 12 & Under in Oetwil Am See (SUI), the Torneo U12 – Porto San Giorgio in Porto San Giorgio (ITA), and the Torneo Citta Di Padova in Padova (ITA). Popyrin suffered losses in the Eddie Herr International Junior Tennis Championships – IMG / Bollettieri Sports Academy Bradenton, FL (USA), Passagespoirs Le Passage (FRA), semi-finals, and final of the Campionati Internazionali BNL d’Italia U12 – Circolo Canottieri in Roma (ITA). 2013 saw Popyrin begin participating on the ITF Junior circuit, and in 2017 she advanced to the junior doubles semifinals of the Australian Open.

At the age of 14, Popyrin participated in his first ITF Futures professional competition in October 2013 and lost to Slovakian Martin Beran in the first round of qualification in Madrid. A year later, at another Spanish ITF Futures tournament, he won his first professional qualifying round but lost in the second round qualifying match, keeping him out of the main draw. After winning a wildcard from Tennis Australia to play in the 2016 Canberra Challenger, Popyrin made his ATP Challenger Tour debut at the age of sixteen in early 2016. Diego Schwartzman, a future player ranked in the top 10, defeated him in the opening round. He won his first professional main draw match in an Italian ITF Futures competition in July 2016.
