Umesh Yadav Career
Domestic Career
Playing cricket with a leather ball led to him being chosen to play for Vidarbha in the Plate League of the Ranji Trophy in the 2007-08 season. He debuted for Vidarbha on 3 November 2008 against Madhya, taking 4 wickets in the first innings. Despite not bowling in the second innings, he ended up losing the match by 10 wickets. Throughout that season, he participated in 4 matches, securing 20 wickets with an average of 14.60 and a best of 6/105. His exceptional pace exceeding the mid-140s and impressive swing in various directions captured the attention of national selectors.
IPL Career
Yadav was bought by Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) for $750,000 in the 2011 Indian Premier League player auction. Although he only managed to take two wickets in seven matches and gave away 169 runs at an average of over nine runs per over. In the 2012 Indian Premier League, he excelled as the fourth-highest wicket-taker, securing 19 wickets from 17 matches. Kolkata Knight Riders purchased him for $419,355 in the 2014 Indian Premier League player auction, and he became a vital component of their bowling attack..
After enjoying four prosperous seasons with KKR, Umesh was let go for the 2018 season. Capitalizing on the chance, Royal Challengers Bangalore signed him for INR 4.2 crore. Displaying his talent in his first season, he secured 20 wickets, resulting in his stay for the next year. Yet, Umesh’s ongoing struggle with bowling in the death overs remains his weakness.
International Career
ODI career
Yadav was named in the 2010 T20 World Cup squad and later participated in a tri-nation ODI series in Zimbabwe. Nine young players, including Yadav, were given the chance to display their skills. Yadav made his ODI debut in a match against Zimbabwe, where he bowled eight overs without taking a wicket and conceded 48 runs. He managed to take just one wicket in the three matches he played. In 2012, during a tri-series in Australia, Yadav bowled at a speed of 152.5 kmph against Sri Lanka in Brisbane, marking the fourth fastest delivery by an Indian after Javagal Srinath, Ishant Sharma, and Varun Aaron.
Yadav returned to international cricket during the 2013 Champions Trophy and delivered an impressive performance. His bowling prowess secured him a place in the event held in Australia and New Zealand. Throughout the World Cup, he secured 18 wickets, finishing as India’s top wicket-taker and the third-highest overall. Although Umesh Yadav was part of the 2017 Champions Trophy team, he only played two matches and took three wickets due to the presence of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah.
T20 Career
After delivering impressive performances in local games, he was chosen to represent India in the 2010 World Twenty20 in place of the injured Praveen Kumar. However, he did not participate in any matches during the event and instead debuted in T20I against Sri Lanka after two years.
Test Career
Yadav debuted in Test cricket during the West Indies’ November 2011 tour. Although he went wicketless in the first innings as an opening bowler, Yadav took two wickets for 36 runs in the second innings, aiding India in their five-wicket victory. Following India’s win in the second Test, Yadav emerged as the leading fast bowler with nine wickets in his name for the series. In the 2011–12 tour of Australia, where India faced a 4-0 loss, Yadav achieved his first five-wicket haul in Test cricket during the third Test at Perth’s WACA Ground, concluding with figures of 5/93 in Australia’s single innings.
During the 2012 Australia tour, India was defeated by Australia. Despite the underperformance of several senior players, Umesh Yadav stood out with his exceptional pace and seam movement, taking 14 wickets in four Tests to become India’s top wicket-taker. Unfortunately, Yadav suffered a lower back injury in December 2012, causing him to miss the second and third tests against England. In the 2014/15 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, Yadav was chosen by the selectors due to a lack of fast bowling options. He demonstrated his skills by claiming 11 wickets in the final 3 Tests. He was also part of India’s winning squad in Australia in 2018, although he had limited opportunities to display his abilities.
