Early life and amateur career

Felton, California, was Gilbert’s upbringing. Gilbert was able to attend Giants games with club seating frequently because his aunt was a Major League Baseball (MLB) employee. In Felton, Gilbert was a student at San Lorenzo Valley High School. Gilbert started playing collegiate baseball with the SBCC Vaqueros after graduating from high school by enrolling at Santa Barbara City collegiate (SBCC). His second season (2013) saw him pitch to a 9–2 win–loss record with an earned run average (ERA) of 2.43. Gilbert won pitcher of the year for the North Division in the Western State Conference. Gilbert played baseball for the USC Trojans during his two seasons at SBCC before transferring to the University of Southern California (USC). He was 5–2 with a 2.79 record.

Professional career

Gilbert was chosen by the Philadelphia Phillies with the 174th overall pick in the sixth round of the 2015 Major League Baseball draft. 2015 saw him sign with the Phillies, who then placed him with the Low-A Williamsport Crosscutters of the New York-Penn League. Gilbert’s record with Williamsport was 4–3, his ERA was 2.79. In 2016, he pitched for the Single-A South Atlantic League’s Lakewood BlueClaws, where he ended the season with a 7–9 win–loss record and a 3.98 ERA. Pitching for the High-A Florida State League’s Clearwater Threshers in 2017, Gilbert recorded a 2.95 ERA. Gilbert started the 2018 campaign with the Double-A Eastern League’s Reading Fightin Phils.

Prior to being promoted to Reading, he was a starting pitcher; after that, he was a bullpen pitcher. In 2018, Gilbert threw to a 2.86 ERA while with Reading. He was promoted to the Triple-A International League’s Lehigh Valley IronPigs in the middle of the season. Gilbert pitched for the Tigres del Licey of the Dominican Professional Baseball League following the 2018 season. 2019 saw Gilbert return to the Lehigh Valley, where he finished the season with a 2.83 ERA. The Phillies traded Gilbert to the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for Kyle Garlick on February 5, 2020. Prior to the COVID-19 epidemic postponing the 2020 minor league season, he participated in spring training with the Dodgers.
