Early Life
Born in ʻEwa Beach, Hawaii, to Galu and Diane Tagovailoa, he is the oldest of four children in a Samoan family. Tagovailoa showed a strong passion for football from a young age; his parents noted that he slept with a football under his arm as a child. At just eight years old, he routinely threw passes exceeding 30 yards during Pop Warner games, well beyond what his peers could manage. A major source of inspiration for Tagovailoa was his grandfather, Seu Tagovailoa, a respected figure in their Samoan community, often referred to as “Chief Tagovailoa.” Seu believed in Tagovailoa’s potential as a football star and requested that he report his progress after each game. Following Seu’s death in 2014, Tagovailoa briefly considered quitting football.
As a varsity player at Saint Louis School, Tagovailoa had a remarkable first season, throwing for 33 touchdowns with just three interceptions and amassing 2,583 passing yards. His father’s strict discipline, which included using a belt when Tagovailoa threw an interception, served as a significant motivator. In 2016, he participated in the All-American Bowl and, during the regular season, threw for 2,669 yards with 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
