Blackburn first rose to prominence while broadcasting on the pirate radio stations Radio Caroline and Radio London during the 1960s. He later joined the BBC, initially working on the BBC Light Programme. He made history as the first disc jockey to broadcast on BBC Radio 1 when it launched on 30 September 1967. Over the years, Blackburn has had multiple tenures with the BBC, in addition to working for Capital London, Classic Gold Digital, and various BBC Local Radio stations. He currently presents for BBC Radio 2 and the British Forces Broadcasting Service. Blackburn was born in Guildford, Surrey, on 29 January 1943. In 1946, his family moved to Poole, Dorset, where his youngest sister, Jacqueline, was born with polio and unable to walk from birth. His father, Kenneth Fleming Blackburn, was a general practitioner, and his mother, Pauline Cubitt (née Stone), worked as a nurse. He was educated at Castle Court School in Corfe Mullen, near Poole, and later received a sports scholarship to Millfield in Somerset, where he captained the school cricket team. Blackburn left before completing his exams but later obtained O-levels through private tuition and enrolled in a Higher National Diploma course in business studies at Bournemouth Technical College.
