Early life and education
Catherine Élise Blanchett was born on May 14, 1969, in Melbourne’s suburb of Ivanhoe. Her Australian mother, June (née Gamble), was a property developer and teacher, while her American father, Robert DeWitt Blanchett Jr., a Texas native, was a United States Navy Chief Petty Officer who later became an advertising executive. They first met when Robert’s ship broke down in Melbourne. Blanchett lost her father to a heart attack when she was ten years old, leaving her mother to manage the family. Blanchett is the second of three children, the other two being an elder brother and a younger sister. Her ancestry includes English, Scottish, and distant French ancestors. Blanchett once characterized herself as a “part extrovert, part wallflower” child. During her adolescence, she enjoyed dressing in typically masculine apparel and went through goth and punk periods.
Blanchett’s debut stage role was opposite Geoffrey Rush in the Sydney Theatre Company’s 1992 production of David Mamet’s Oleanna. That year, she also played Clytemnestra in a staging of Sophocles’ Electra. The actress who was supposed to play the main part dropped out a few weeks into rehearsals, so director Lindy Davies cast Blanchett. Her performance as Electra was one of her most celebrated at NIDA. Blanchett earned the Sydney Theatre Critics’ Best Newcomer Award for her performance in Timothy Daly’s Kafka Dances in 1993, as well as Best Actress for her portrayal in Mamet’s Oleanna, becoming the only actor to win both awards in the same year. Blanchett performed the part of Ophelia in an acclaimed 1994-1995 Company B performance.

Blanchett is married to Andrew Upton, a playwright and screenwriter. They met in Australia in the mid-1990s and got married on December 29, 1997. They have three sons and one daughter, who was adopted in 2015. Blanchett stated that she and her husband had intended to adopt since the birth of their first son. After nearly ten years of living in Brighton, England, she and her husband returned to Australia in 2006. Blanchett explained in November 2006 that the move was motivated by a desire to find a permanent home for her children, be closer to her family, and feel a part of the Australian theatrical scene. She and her family lived in the Sydney neighborhood of Hunters Hill, and they significantly renovated.
