Career
Cheryl auditioned for the reality television show Popstars: The Rivals in 2002, which intended to form a boy band and a female group to battle for the Christmas number one place on the UK Singles Chart. She performed “Have You Ever” at her audition and was picked as one of twenty finalists (ten girls and ten boys) by judges Pete Waterman, Louis Walsh, and Geri Halliwell. The finalists performed live on Saturday evenings, with one gender performing each week, and each week, the competitor with the fewest phone votes was eliminated, until the final five-piece group lineups emerged. Cheryl was almost eliminated twice, but she defeated Emma Beard and Aimee Kearsley in successive performance weeks.
She was the first competitor to qualify for the girl group on November 30, 2002, and formed Girls Aloud with Nadine Coyle, Sarah Harding, Nicola Roberts, and Kimberley Walsh after the final public vote. The group’s debut single “Sound of the Underground” reached at number one on the UK Singles Chart, becoming the 2002 Christmas number one, surpassing boy band One True Voice’s “Sacred Trust / After You’re Gone”. Girls Aloud holds the record for the quickest time between band formation and number-one song.
