After playing for the local Greifswalder SC team, Kroos moved on to the Hansa Rostock youth squad. In 2006, Kroos joined Bayern Munich’s youth team. Due to training, Kroos missed up to 40 days of school during the academic year. At the age of seventeen, Kroos was called up to the senior squad of Bayern for the 2007–08 campaign.
